How to Root and More

In this post i will explain and demonstrate how simple it is to play with our phones with this incredible tool provided by Androxyde and Bin4ry.

1. ROOT ACCESS
To gain root acces it`s quite easy. Just have to do this:

1. On your phone check "debbuging mode" on Setting > Applications > Development
2. Plug you USB cable
3. Open your flashtool and click on Root box
4. Wait a few seconds and your phone will rebbot
5. Voilá

2. CLEAN SE JUNK

Now this is where it can get tricky. Remember this: DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! On next post i will provide a list of witch apps you can delete. without messing your phone.

1. On your phone check "debbuging mode" on Setting > Applications > Development
2. Plug you USB cable
3. Open your flashtool and click on Clean box. If you can`t do that press on Ask Root Perms before.
4. Now from the new window you just have to choose witch apps you want to install/remove. It can`t be more simplier

NOTE: If you don`t want to loose the possibility of the phone automatically acquire APN settings, please remove ReadyToRun file from the top right window (it will remove by default).
Also install a home replacement before you delete SE Home Launcher

5. Once you're done just press on the OK button.

info: All chages you made here will affect how system will work. All apps will be instaled/removed on system/app folder. The only way you can remove files from here is by using thridparty apps (like TitaniumBackup) or this tool.

3. CUSTOMIZE

This is another great option of this tool. With this you can install all your *.apk files in just one click. To do that:

1. Copy your *.apk to FlashTool > custom > apps
2. On your phone check "debbuging mode" on Setting > Applications > Development
3. Plug you USB cable
4. Press Customize button on flashtool
5. That´s it...dificult, hã?

3. OPTIMIZE

What does this do? Simple. Install JIT on your phone
And what the hell is JIT? See THIS

In another words. On stock rom you`ll get 450 (more or less) and after applying this you`ll get 650 (more or less) on bechmark tests.

1. On your phone check "debbuging mode" on Setting > Applications > Development
2. Plug you USB cable
3. Press Optimize button on flashtool
4. Your phonne will reboot

4. ADVANCED MENU

From here you can do some tweaks on your phone.
Install xRecovery to install/backup rom´s and more
Play with build.prop - be carefull with this!!! for some tweaks see THIS post

note: If you had any issues with xRecovery (X10 HD) please go HERE and download xRecovery-0.2-X10HD-release.apk fix by zdzihu.

Rooting & Installing Recovery on X10

The rooting part is for Stock SE 2.3.3 FW...

The installing recovery part is for all ROMs based on SE 2.3.3 FW... if the Dev of ur ROM has not yet included the latest xRecovery posted by Z ONLY then install the recovery! else wait for the ROM dev to include it in that ROM..

i am posting this because many ppl are getting confused over the slightly "complicated" process...

i have personally verified all the below steps atleast 4 times! and it works properly! please follow the below instructions step by step...

[ Requirement ]
1. Stock SE 2.3.3 firmware/custom 2.3.3 ROM (if u want to update/install xRecovery the simple way)
2. my modified Flashtool package posted below

[ Whats Included? ]
1. modified Flashtool 0.2.9.1 package
2. aZuZu's FTF files posted for rooting
3. zdzihu's xRecovery-0.3-GBready (with all fixes made by Z)

[ Downloads ]

FlashTool_0.2.9.1-GBready_root_xRec [ Mirrors ]
1. Just download and double click on the downloaded file
2. it will ask where u want to install/extract, browse to that folder then click on "Extract"
3. once its extracted go into that folder and u can now launch Flashtool using X10FlashTool.exe

[ How To: Root ] (all credits for finding this method go to aZuZu)

looking at the files posted by aZuZu i can tell u that this will work on ALL BRANDED/GENERIC/REGIONAL 2.3.3 GB FWs... provided that the kernel.sin file remains same (which it will for all 3.0.1.G.0.75 FW)

1. make sure u are on stock 2.3.3 FW

2. [ON UR PHONE] enable Unknown Sources & USB debugging in:
o Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Unknown Sources
o Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging

3. power down device

4. Open the flashtool provided in this thread

5. Flash -- Kernel downgrade

6. after u see the following remove the USB cable

7. DO NOT CLOSE FLASHTOOL

8. remove usb cable

9. Power on device

10. u will feel a small vibration when u power on device at that point immediately connect usb cable

11. when the device starts IT WILL get stuck at SE text logo & u will see the following in flashtool log/window:

Tag Cloud
o Free software downloads
o Software Downloads
o Laptop Battery
o Business Credits
o Free Downloads
o Business Logo
o Via Usb
o Credit
o Credits
o Internet Connections

The modification by Graveir.

So far tested on: miniCM RC1, CM7 RC4

To work!

1. We go to /system/etc/firmaware directory and find files named:
Code:

/etc/firmware/fm_rx_init_1273.2.bts
/etc/firmware/fm_tx_init_1273.2.bts
/etc/firmware/fmc_init_1273.2.bts
2. Are they there? Good, don't touch them. Are they not there? Well, it's a pity, you won't get 5GHz band :P

3. Go back to /system/etc and find a file named tiwlan.ini
NOTE: In CM7 based ROMs the path may be /system/etc/wifi
4. Look for the following lines:
Code:
HT_Enable=0                                           #0=diable 802.11n support / 1=Enable
BurstModeEnable = 0                                   # 0 - Disabled  1 - Enabled
WiFiAdhoc = 0
     and change them into:
Code:
HT_Enable=1                                           #0=diable 802.11n support / 1=Enable
BurstModeEnable = 1                                   # 0 - Disabled  1 - Enabled
WiFiAdhoc = 1
5. This stage is for people who have files from step 1!
    Look for the line:
Code:
Single_Dual_Band_Solution = 0
     and change it into
Code:
Single_Dual_Band_Solution = 1
6. Save, reboot.

Troubleshooting: If after enabling your wifi keeps disconnecting, or you get the "connecting" bug, go to settings->networks->wifi, erase all remembered networks and reboot.

Disclamer: if you crush your wifi or brick your phone, I'm not responsible for it.

5GHz band and AdHoc features need testing to prove they work, N standard 100% working.
Also, I've been told that each ROM has different tiwlan file - if it's so, then we need custom zip for each ROM available.

Enjoy, X8 users!

How to Install APP2SD MOD

Now after we have root for 2.1 most of you will want to have app2sd also. The script for x10 mini pro works ok but it has one limitation. It moves only the /data/app folder to your ext2 partition on the SD card. The /data/dalvik-cache folder remains in the internal memory and this is why you still see your internal memory free space decreasing when installing applications.

I have modified the script so it also moves the dalvik cache to your SD card. I recommend to use at least class 4 SD card for this. I have attached the modified script. Follow the instructions from the original thread but use the files from my attachment. For me it works fine.If you have any problems please share so we can try to fix them together.

And finally using both the original and modified app2sd you CAN normally use your sd card as mass storage device.

Newest SE update (2.1.1.A.0.6), download here

Move zip file to root of sd card.

Go into xrecovery and select install custom zip

You can use ext2 or ext4 but i think with ext3 will be faster.

Thats all!!!!!

Warning: There are sometimes problem when partitioning sd card. You need to try several times until worked. When you boot your phone first time aplications will not work so wait few minutes and shut down the phone and turn it on then all will be ok.

How to Install & Use xRecovery

Installation
Installing xRecovery is the first step in the world of custom ROMs. Installing xRecovery also means if you are stuck in a bootloop, you can just recover to a working backup.

The first step is to download xRecovery mini-beta 0.1 (any other version WILL NOT work on your X8) download here.

Next, download Root Explorer download here.

Copy both the xRecovery folder and the Root Explorer .apk to your SD card.

Install any file manager from the Android Market (I recommend OI File Manager or Astro) and use it to browse to the Root Explorer .apk file and install it.

Run Root Explorer, browse to the xRecovery folder and copy the 3 files inside onto the /system/bin folder.

xRecovery is installed. To start xRecovery you press the Back button while the Sony Ericsson logo is showing during boot. Restart your phone and just keep pressing the Back button.

To move around in xRecovery you use the volume buttons, to select an item you press the Home button (the middle one), and to go back you press the Back button. Go ahead and make a backup of your current system (make sure you have at least 300MB of free space on your SD card.

You'll find the backup you just made in the xRecovery/backup folder. Name it something you can identify (don't use spaces). Copy that backup onto somewhere safe on your PC.

Guide to Use

Volume control use to move around in xRecovery program.

Middle Button use to accept your choise.

Back Button use to back to page before.

Instruction you need will appear in xRecovery program.

How to Rescue Our Bricked Phone

Some people seem to have trouble with looking for info, so here it is, in noob friendly, convenient way.
There are basically four ways to restore our phone to usability, and usage somewhat depends upon how heavily is your system damaged.

1. xRecovery
If our phone does not load the system (so we're stuck at SE logo on boot) and we have xRecovery, we can flash the last working backup. This is as clear as it can be, provided that you need to know something already to install xRecovery.

For those who don't know what it is: it's a boothack, which allows to backup and restore all the data stored on phone memory, install custom zips and do other cunning stuff.

2. Flashtool
Flashtool is a software developed for Xperia X10, with later added functionality for our precious X8.

It comes in handy when two things happen: we cannot, for whatever reason, enter xRecovery and we don't want to/cannot use SEUS or PCC.

How to use?
1. Download latest version, download here.
2. Download ROM image, whichever you prefer:
    X8 Shakira E15i_2.1.1.A.0.6_generic.ftf
    X8_1.6_clear.ftf
    X8_2.0.2_China.ftf
    SE x8_2.1_rus.ftf
3. Download the baseband if you want to flash it (custom ROMs like miniCM or CM7 require baseband ending with "15" in order for app2sd to work): download here
4. Place ftf file in /firmwares directory of your flashtool.
5. Install drivers from /drivers directory (if your antivirus doesn't like them, disable the antivirus :P)
6. Prepare yourself - plug the USB cable to the computer (NOT TO THE DEVICE YET) and launch flasher.
7. Click "flash", choose your ROM from the list, wait for instructions.
8. When the instruction pops up, press and hold "back" button on your X8 and plug the cable into it. Keep holding untill you see that flashing of files has begun, then you may release it.
9. Flashing will take a while, you may observe the progress on a bottom bar. When it's finished you will be asked to plug off your device and reboot it.
10. Tadam! It's functional again! Clean installation which you may screw up again.
11. If you wish to change baseband, clean firmware directory in flashtool and place baseband ftf file in it, then go through flashing procedure again.

3. SEUS/PCC flashing
Most probably the most prototipical way to deal with it. PCC is PC Companion, soft that you obtain on your SD card along with your device, or you can download from SE website: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/supp...10?cc=gb&lc=en

Once downloaded and installed, launch it. Most probably it will download some updates. Then choose device updating and follow the instructions. As for flashing - the procedure with holidng back button is the same as with flashtool.

As PCC is heavy and buggy, we are presented with an alternative - SEUS, the Sony Ericsson Update Service. You may download it here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/supp...10?cc=gb&lc=en

Once installed and launched, SEUS will start looking for updates. Let it take its time. After a while you will be presented with a board full of phones. Choose your Xperia from the list and continue. You will be asked to flash your phone, analogically as in flashtool in point 2. After flashing is done, SEUS will download the latest SE ROM available for your device and flash it.

ATTENTION
Flashtool, PCC and SEUS will cause loss of data such as contacts, stored messages, installed apps and so on. Anything that exists in phone memory will be erased.

Flashing a backup in xRecovery will cause similar data loss. However, it is possible to flash only system or only data backup in xRecovery. Some ROMs (like miniCM) are updated by update.zip which erases only /system folder, leaving personal data and installed apps intact.

However, you need to be able to enter xRecovery mode in order to use it, SEUS and flashtool do not require enabling the phone. PCC requires the phone to be turned on first in order to recognize it correctly, so it's more update-oriented.

Hope someone will benefit. If you see any mistakes, in spelling, grammar or content, let me know and I will correct it!

Rooting

A Warning

First off, let me start by saying that if you don't think you need rooting, don't root. It can be dangerous if done wrong, so be sure you know what you're doing. With that out of the way, let's get going then.

Updates and Basebands

First, before you do anything else, you need to update your phone using PC Companion download here. PC Companion will guide you right through all the steps for updating.

The latest version is 2.1.1.A.0.6, and the latest baseband is M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015.

You can check your version by going to Settings -> About Phone.
If you are already running a custom ROM, you should update using PC Companion too, because some roms (like MiniCM) need the latest official version.

Rooting

This is very simple to do, really.

First, download SuperOneClick, download here and place it on your desktop.

Next, on your phone, go to Settings -> Applications and enable Unknown Sources. Next, go to Settings -> Applications -> Development and enable USB debugging.

You also need the proper USB drivers. To check if you have them, start SuperOneClick.exe and click Driver Check. If the driver check fails, update your phone with PC Companion.

Now, connect your USB cable from your X8 to your computer. When connected it is VERY IMPORTANT to select CHARGE PHONE. Really, I can't stress this enough.

Start SuperOneClick.exe and just click ROOT. Everything should go normally. You might get a message asking you if your OS is 2.0 or higher, just go ahead and click Yes.

You should now be rooted!

xRecovery

YOU MUST BE ROOTED TO DO THIS

So, you bricked your phone.

Don't panic, don't worry, everything is going to be alright. If you have xRecovery installed, just recover the latest backup you made. That simple. If, however, you DON'T have xRecovery installed, we can still recover your dear phone, don't worry.

Using PC Companion: Connect your phone to your PC and turn it on. Look around the update phone section of PC Companion for an option called "Repair your phone". Just follow the steps and your phone will be in working order pretty soon.

That's about it, I'll probably add a section for custom ROMs in the future, with links to ROMs I recommend.
So, if you have any questions, feel free to post below.

Root Android

Rooting your Android phone is a term that you are bound to across at some point or another while searching on how to optimize your Android device. With millions of new Android owners each month we decided to give a basic introduction into the world of rooting and to let you decide if it’s something you’d like to do.

What is Rooting?

Rooting is the process by which you regain administrative access to your phone. Even though Android is an open source operating system you still don’t have full “root access” to do what you please. Back when the iPhone launched in 2007 the hardcore techies quickly realized the true potential of the device, and the cruel software limitations that Apple had sealed it with. What became ‘Jailbreaking’ on iPhone was quickly translated to other platforms as well, and when the world saw the first Android back in 2008, the term “Rooting” was born.

Why Root your Android Phone/Tablet?

The main reason people root their Android device for freedom and control, when you root your Android phone or tablet you gain full control over your system and can tweak it to your liking.
Improved Performance: You can speed up your Android device by relocating your phones cache thus allowing you to save phone memory and have a faster phone. There are applications available in the Android Market that will allow you to overclock your device to make it go as fast as you dare.
Alter System Files: You can replace many parts of the “Android Core” which include the ability to add new themes, edit the core apps (maps, calendar, clock, etc), change the recovery & boot images, add linux binaries.
More Application Choics: You will be able to install apps that are only compatible with rooted phones, some of these apps include an app that will allow you to take a screenshot on your phone, overclock your device and tether apps.
Install applications to your SD CARD: One of the most talked-about feature (or disadvantage) of any Android device is the limitation where you can install applications only in the phone’s internal memory and not the SD card. While Google may reason that SD cards are slower in general and cannot run apps as effectively as internal memory, fact of the matter is that most Android devices do not come with massive internal storage spaces, and hence greatly limit the number of applications that can be installed at a time. With rooted devices, you can use Apps2SD, which will copy ALL your applications to a ext2/3/4 formatted SD card an will also store future builds in card. Freedom to choose!
Latest Android OS (Operating System): With many carriers holding back the updates to the latest Android operating system, rooting your device will give you the option to install any current and future OS’s by installing custom-tailored ROMs.
WI-FI and Bluetooth Tethering: After having rooted your device, you can also use WiFi or Bluetooth tether to share your cellular data connection with your laptop or PC. The application works with ad hoc connections and will get you up and running online on your laptop in no time. Similarly, tethering can also be achieved over a Bluetooth connection.

How to Root Your Phone/Tablet?

To Root your phone you will have to download an application from the internet, the most popular apps are SuperOneClick, Z4Root and Universal AndRoot. The procedure for rooting an Android device varies from device to device as such there are many different device specific guides. Website AddictiveTips has put together the largest guide for rooting phones that we found. Some other good resources for finding rooting guides include the XDA Developers Forums & this topic at AndroidForums. In most cases the Rooting procedure is as easy as a couple of clicks, of course there are nightmare stories and people having difficulties, so read on about the risks of rooting.

What are the risks of Rooting?

Rooting your phone does come with some risks, the most notable risk is that you will void any warranty that you have on your device. However you may be able to find the stock rom for your device in which case you can reverse the rooting and make your phone stock again. You may have difficulty finding the stock ROM for your device, it all depends on your device, but it’s something worth finding before you do root.
Other then the voiding your warranty, there isn’t that much risk involved. There have been some users on Android forums that have run into problems,  bricking your device is a possibility if a freak accident occurs while flashing archives. You should however not run into any problems, most users report the process as being a painless easy process.
Rooting your device can be a fun process, giving you the freedom and control to take your phone to a whole new level of function. We do recommend that you do your due diligence to ensure the rooting process goes as smoothly as possible. What are your thoughts on rooting? Was it an easy experience? Do you recommend it to others? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
